Almaty answers a question Indian travellers didn't know they were asking: where do you find genuine alpine scenery — glacial lakes, cable cars, ski runs — on a four-hour direct flight, with fourteen days visa-free and prices that undercut Himachal in season? Kazakhstan's cultural capital sits against the Tian Shan mountains like Geneva against the Alps, minus the Swiss invoice.

The shape of the trip

City and mountains (6 nights): two days for Almaty itself — the wooden Zenkov Cathedral, the Green Bazaar's dried-fruit mountains, Kok-Tobe hill and a café scene that surprises everyone. Then the mountains: the Medeu skating rink and Shymbulak cable car ascent, Big Almaty Lake, and a full-day run to Charyn Canyon — a red-rock gorge that photographs like Arizona (₹3,500–4,500 on a group tour). Winter visitors swap the hikes for ski days: passes and rentals at Shymbulak together cost under ₹4,500 a day.

The money

One tenge is about 0.16 rupees — mentally divide by six. Solid central hotels cost ₹3,500–6,000; a shashlik-and-plov feast, ₹500–800; the metro, ₹20. Yandex Go (the local Uber) makes the city trivially cheap to navigate. Mobile data is among the cheapest on earth.

Worth knowing

Fourteen days is a hard limit — no extensions for tourists, so plan inside it. Russian is more useful than English outside hotels; translation apps carry you fine. Altitude at Shymbulak's top station exceeds 3,100 metres — pace the first day. And carry cash for the bazaars; cards rule everywhere else.
