Bali has become the default international honeymoon for Indian travellers — and for good reason. Connections through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok put you on the island in under twelve hours, the visa is stamped on arrival, and the rupee-to-rupiah maths makes a private pool villa cost less than a 4-star room in Goa during peak season. But Bali rewards planning more than almost any destination: the difference between a magical trip and a traffic-choked disappointment is entirely in where you base yourself and how you move.
Ubud (the cultural heart). Inland, surrounded by rice terraces and river gorges. This is the Bali of yoga studios, artisan markets, the Sacred Monkey Forest and the island's most interesting food scene. Stay here for calm mornings, temple day-trips and the classic jungle-villa experience. The trade-off: it is 90 minutes from the beaches, and evenings are quiet.
Seminyak and Canggu (beach life). The west coast strip is where the beach clubs, surf schools, boutiques and nightlife live. Seminyak is polished and expensive by Bali standards; Canggu is younger, scruffier, and currently fighting the worst traffic on the island. Sunsets here are the postcard ones.
Uluwatu (the dramatic south). Clifftop temples, world-class surf breaks, and the famous Kecak fire dance performed at sunset on the temple cliff edge. The beaches — Padang Padang, Bingin, Melasti — are the island's most beautiful, reached by steep stairways that keep the crowds thinner.
Nusa Penida (the day-trip island). The Instagram cliffs — Kelingking, Diamond Beach, Broken Beach — are all here, a 45-minute fast boat from Sanur. Doable as a long day trip; better as one overnight.
First-timers, 6 nights: 3 nights Ubud → 3 nights Uluwatu or Seminyak. Honeymooners add 1 night on Nusa Penida. Do not attempt to "see everything" — distances look small on the map but Bali traffic doubles every journey time.
Day 1: Land in Denpasar, transfer to Ubud (90 min). Evening walk through the Ubud Palace area and dinner on Jalan Goutama, the little street where the good cheap restaurants cluster.
Day 2: Sunrise at Tegallalang rice terraces (before the 9am crowds), then the Tirta Empul water temple, lunch at a warung overlooking the Campuhan ridge, and the Sacred Monkey Forest in the late afternoon — hold nothing loose, the monkeys are professionals.
Day 3: North Bali day trip: the Handara Gate, Ulun Danu Bratan lake temple, and either the Sekumpul or Banyumala waterfalls. This is a full day with a driver (₹3,500–₹4,500) and the least crowded, most beautiful day of the trip.
Day 4: Transfer south. En route, stop at Tanah Lot temple — yes it is crowded, yes it is worth it at low tide. Check into Uluwatu, sunset at your hotel.
Day 5: Beach morning at Padang Padang or Melasti, then Uluwatu Temple for the 6pm Kecak fire dance — buy tickets an hour early and sit on the left side for the sunset behind the dancers.
Day 6: Nusa Penida day trip (book the 7am boat) or a lazy beach-club day. Farewell seafood dinner on Jimbaran beach, toes in the sand, grilled snapper by candlelight.

The warung — a small family-run eatery — is where Bali eats. A nasi goreng or mie goreng runs ₹250–₹400; the famous crispy duck at Bebek Bengil in Ubud is ₹900. Vegetarians are spoiled here: tempeh, tofu, gado-gado and an entire plant-based café culture in Ubud and Canggu. Indian restaurants exist in every tourist area (Queens of India is the reliable chain) when the craving hits. Beach clubs charge Mumbai prices — a sunset drink at a famous one is ₹700–₹1,200 — so treat them as an event, not a routine.
Among the best in Southeast Asia. Ubud in particular has dozens of fully vegetarian cafés, and warungs will happily make anything without meat or egg. Jain travellers should learn to say "no garlic, no onion" — kitchens are accommodating but the concept needs explaining.
Six nights covers two regions well. Eight to nine nights lets you add Nusa Penida overnight and north Bali without rushing. A 4-night trip should stay in one region only.
Broadly yes, and thousands travel solo here every month. Standard precautions apply: licensed transport at night, guard your drink in nightlife areas, and keep valuables out of scooter baskets — snatch thefts are the island's most common crime.
