No destination rewards a well-planned five days like Dubai. It is close enough for a long weekend, familiar enough that nothing feels difficult, and engineered top to bottom for visitors — which is exactly why it needs a strategy, because every attraction is priced for tourists who didn't plan. This guide is that strategy.

The five-day framework that works

Day 1 — Downtown. Burj Khalifa "At the Top" at the 4:30pm slot (roughly 40% cheaper booked online than walk-in, and you get daylight, sunset and night views in one ticket). Then the Dubai Mall aquarium wall — free to view from outside — and the fountain show, every 30 minutes after 6pm. Dinner at the Souk Al Bahar side for fountain views without the restaurant markup of the mall promenade.

Day 2 — Old Dubai. The half of the city most visitors skip and most regret skipping. Start in the Al Fahidi Historical District's wind-tower lanes and the Coffee Museum, cross the creek on an abra water taxi (1 dirham — the best-value ride in the Emirates), then lose an hour in the Gold and Spice Souks. Lunch in a Pakistani or Keralite canteen in Deira for ₹300 — some of the best food in the city hides here.

Day 3 — The desert. Book a conservation-reserve safari operator rather than the cheapest dune-bashing package; the difference is a protected desert with oryx and proper falconry versus a crowded sand bowl. Evening safari with BBQ dinner runs ₹4,500–₹7,000. Morning option: hot-air balloon over the dunes at sunrise (₹18,000+ but a life memory).

Day 4 — New Dubai. Marina walk, the Palm Jumeirah monorail (sit on the right going out for Atlantis views), The View at The Palm observation deck, and JBR beach in the late afternoon. Sunset from a dhow or yacht-share cruise in the Marina (₹2,500–₹4,000 with dinner).

Day 5 — Choose your finale. Either the Abu Dhabi day trip — the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the single most beautiful building in the Gulf, and it is free — or the Museum of the Future plus a farewell brunch. If travelling December–January, spend the day at Global Village instead: 90 country pavilions, ₹500 entry, genuinely fun.

Dubai's secret is that it is one of the world's great Indian and Pakistani food cities. Ravi Restaurant in Satwa (a legend since 1978), the Keralite canteens of Karama, and the Afghan bread bakeries of Deira all serve extraordinary food for ₹250–₹500 a meal. Mall food courts are reliable at ₹600–₹900. Save the fine dining budget for one night — a fountain-view dinner or a beachfront Friday brunch — rather than spreading it thin.

What Indians specifically should know

• UPI works at a growing number of Dubai retailers via NIPL tie-ups — but carry a zero-forex-markup card as primary, and a little cash for souks and abras.
• Gold is genuinely cheaper, but making charges vary wildly between souk shops. Negotiate the making charge, never the gold rate (which is fixed daily), and always take the invoice for customs.
• Customs limits: male passengers returning to India can carry 20g of gold (duty-free cap ₹50,000), women 40g (₹1,00,000). Above that, duty applies — factor it into the "savings."
• DSF (Dubai Shopping Festival, Dec–Jan) discounts are real, but flight prices during it are not. Book flights ten weeks out or fly midweek.
• Alcohol is legal in licensed venues only; public drinking and drunkenness are seriously penalised. During Ramadan, eating in public daylight hours is restricted outside designated areas.
