Every Indian traveller has Kashmir on the list; most keep postponing it for a foreign trip that costs twice as much and delivers half the scenery. Here is the honest, current picture — the circuit that works, what it really costs, and the season-by-season truth about when to go.

The circuit: Srinagar → Gulmarg → Pahalgam

Srinagar (2 nights). Stay one night in a heritage houseboat — choose Nigeen Lake over Dal if you want the quiet, mirror-still version — and take the dawn shikara ride when the floating vegetable market and the flower boats are out and the day-trippers aren't. Spend a golden-hour evening in the Mughal gardens: Nishat for scale, Shalimar for history, Pari Mahal for the view over the whole valley. The old city around Jamia Masjid and the copper bazaars of Zaina Kadal are the most underrated half-day in Indian tourism.

Gulmarg (1–2 nights). The gondola to Apharwat is Asia's highest cable car; book Phase 1 + Phase 2 tickets online days ahead in peak season, and go up before 10am when the queues triple. In winter this is a genuine ski resort with rental gear and instructors at a fraction of European prices; in summer, the meadow itself — golf course, pony trails, wildflowers — is the point.

Pahalgam (2 nights). Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari are the taxi-circuit sights (local union taxis only — your Srinagar driver must park), but the real magic is unscheduled: walking the Lidder river at dawn, trout for lunch, the pine forests above town. If you have a spare day, the offbeat add-on is Doodhpathri — a meadow an hour from Srinagar that most itineraries skip and shouldn't.

What it costs, honestly

Negotiate the full-circuit taxi rate at the start rather than daily rates, and confirm it includes the driver's stay. A couple travelling comfortable-but-not-luxury should budget ₹90,000–₹1,10,000 all-in for 6 nights — roughly half of an equivalent Europe week, for scenery that gives up nothing.

Season by season

Late March–April: tulips (see our dedicated timing guide), almond blossom, snow still on Gulmarg — the best-value fortnight of the year. May–June: peak season, peak prices, everything open. July–September: the valleys at their greenest, occasional rain, Sonamarg accessible. October: chinar trees turn gold and crimson — the photographers' secret season. December–February: snow, skiing, and Srinagar at minus temperatures; magical if you pack for it, miserable if you don't.

Is it safe?

The tourist circuit — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg — has been consistently calm and heavily welcoming; tourism is the valley's economic lifeline and visitors are treated accordingly. Sensible practice: follow the news the week before travel as you would for any destination, keep your itinerary on the main circuit, and book through established operators. Houseboat or hotel in Srinagar?

One night houseboat for the experience, remaining nights in a hotel or heritage stay for comfort — houseboat bathrooms and heating vary. Nigeen Lake boats are quieter; Dal Lake boats are closer to the action.

Can I use my phone in Kashmir?

Postpaid SIMs from all major operators work normally. Prepaid SIMs from outside J&K do not work — the single most common surprise for visitors. Either convert to postpaid before travelling or buy a local prepaid SIM on arrival (takes a day to activate).

Is Kashmir suitable for elderly parents?
