There is wildlife-watching, and there is the moment a million wildebeest hesitate at the Mara river while crocodiles wait — the Great Migration remains nature's supreme spectacle, and Kenya stages it with an infrastructure honed over a century of safaris. Beyond the Mara wait Amboseli's elephants beneath Kilimanjaro, Lake Nakuru's flamingos, and the particular magic of a sundowner as the savannah exhales.

The shape of the trip

The classic (6 nights): Nairobi briefly (the Giraffe Centre and the elephant orphanage earn a morning), then the Masai Mara (3 nights) — dawn and dusk drives, a Maasai village visit, and in season the crossings; add Amboseli (2 nights) for elephants against the mountain, or Nakuru's lake en route.

The money

Safari pricing is package pricing: a quality mid-range circuit (lodge or tented camp, full board, game drives, park fees) runs ₹18,000–30,000 per person per day — the park fees alone are substantial. The splurge that repays itself: a balloon safari over the Mara at dawn (~₹35,000). Flying Nairobi–Mara (₹15,000 return) saves six rough road hours.

Worth knowing

Book migration season 6–9 months out — the good camps go first. Yellow fever certificate is checked; carry it with the eTA. Pack neutrals and layers (savannah dawns are cold), and choose operators with named, reviewed guides — the guide is the safari.
