Malaysia

Malaysia
The Compass Brief — Malaysia

🗓 Best time: December–April for the west coast (Langkawi, Penang, KL); March–September for the east-coast islands (Perhentians, Redang). Kuala Lumpur works year-round between afternoon showers.

💰 Realistic budget: ₹55,000–₹80,000 per person for 7 nights including flights, mid-range.

🛂 Visa for Indians: Visa-free for Indian passports until 31 December 2026, up to 30 days. One requirement remains: the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), submitted free online within 3 days before arrival.

Malaysia is the quiet professional of Southeast Asia — less shouted-about than Thailand, less Instagrammed than Bali, and frequently better value than both. Indians currently enter visa-free for stays up to 30 days, a policy confirmed through the end of 2026, and the flight map is generous: Kuala Lumpur connects directly with a dozen Indian cities at fares that regularly undercut domestic routes.

George Town shophouses, Penang
George Town, Penang — arguably the best eating city in Southeast Asia, and a UNESCO site into the bargain.

The shape of the trip

The classic week: Kuala Lumpur for the Petronas skyline, Batu Caves and the food courts (2 nights), Penang for George Town's street art and hawker stalls (2–3 nights), then Langkawi for beaches, the sky bridge and duty-free prices (2–3 nights). Travellers with rainforest ambitions can swap Langkawi for Taman Negara or push to Borneo for orangutans — a different trip entirely, and a reason to return.

The money

One ringgit is roughly ₹19. Hawker meals that constitute serious eating cost ₹150–300; a solid four-star double in KL, ₹4,500–7,000; Grab rides across town, ₹150–350. The KLIA Ekspres airport train (₹1,100) beats a taxi at rush hour. Langkawi's duty-free status makes it the one place in the region where the bar bill pleasantly surprises.

The paperwork detail everyone forgets

Visa-free does not mean form-free: the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card must be submitted online within three days before you land — it is free, takes five minutes, and immigration expects it done. Carry proof of accommodation and a return ticket; officers do occasionally ask.
