Restless Compass Destination Guide · Updated July 2026
The Compass Brief — Maldives
🗓 Best time: November to April (dry season). May–October is cheaper with short daily showers.
💰 Realistic budget: ₹70,000 (guesthouse route) to ₹3,00,000+ (resort route) per person for 4–5 nights.
🛂 Visa for Indians: Free 30-day visa on arrival for Indians. Just carry hotel confirmation and return ticket.
The Maldives runs on a two-tier system that most travel content never explains: the resort islands you see on Instagram, and the local islands where Maldivians actually live. Understanding the difference — and choosing deliberately between them — is the entire game. Get it right and this is the easiest luxury trip on earth from India; get it wrong and it's the most expensive disappointment.
The overwater villa at golden hour — the image that launched a million honeymoons. Mid-tier resorts deliver it from ₹35,000 a night.
The resort route (the dream)
One island, one resort: everything — meals, transfers, spa, activities — happens on your island and is priced in dollars. The mechanics that matter:
Villa types: beach villas are larger and better for families; overwater villas are the honeymoon icon. Many couples split the stay — two nights beach, two nights overwater — which also trims the bill.
Meal plans decide everything. À la carte resort dining will double your bill; choose half-board minimum, and at higher-priced resorts, all-inclusive usually wins once you count water, coffee and sunset drinks.
The transfer is unavoidable and unlisted. Speedboat (near-Malé resorts) runs ₹8,000–₹18,000 per person return; seaplane (far atolls) ₹25,000–₹45,000. A "cheap" far-atoll deal often isn't once the seaplane is added — always price the transfer before falling in love with a resort.
What it costs: genuine mid-tier overwater villas start around ₹35,000–₹50,000 a night; the famous names run ₹1,00,000–₹2,50,000. A realistic 4-night mid-tier honeymoon, half-board with speedboat transfers, lands at ₹2,40,000–₹3,20,000 for two including flights.
The guesthouse route (the secret)
Since 2010, locals have been allowed to run guesthouses on inhabited islands — and it quietly created the world's cheapest access to world-class ocean. Maafushi (45 min by public speedboat from Malé, ₹1,500) is the hub: licensed guesthouses at ₹4,000–₹8,000 a night, dive schools, sandbank picnics and dolphin cruises at a third of resort prices. Thoddoo has the best beaches and fruit farms; Fulidhoo and Dhigurah are quieter with whale-shark access.
The trade-offs are real: no alcohol on local islands (it's prohibited outside resorts), modest dress in the village (designated "bikini beaches" exist on every tourist island), and simpler rooms. The gain: a real country, snorkelling straight off the beach, and a 5-night trip for two — flights included — under ₹1,50,000. Day passes to nearby resorts (₹6,000–₹10,000 with lunch and pool access) let you borrow the luxury for an afternoon.
Maafushi's bikini beach — same turquoise, one-fifth the price. The guesthouse route is the Maldives' best-kept open secret.

Guesthouse + resort day pass

The house reef does not know what you paid — snorkelling off a local island delivers the same aquarium.
Booking intel
May–July is the value window: resorts discount 30–50%, and the "rainy season" mostly means an hour of afternoon rain on a 29°C day.
Book transfers with the room, never separately — resorts control the seaplane schedules and late bookings pay premiums.
Indians get the free visa on arrival, but immigration genuinely checks hotel confirmations — carry printouts, and fill the IMUGA traveller declaration online within 96 hours before both arrival and departure.
Flights: direct from Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kochi to Malé from ₹14,000–₹22,000 return; Kochi is often cheapest.
Honeymoon perks are real but must be claimed: mention it at booking AND at check-in with marriage-date proof — decorated beds, cakes and the occasional villa upgrade follow.
Frequently asked questions
How many nights are enough?
Four to five. The Maldives is a one-island experience — by day five the pattern (swim, eat, spa, sunset) is complete. Money left over extends better in Sri Lanka or Dubai en route.
Is the Maldives worth it outside a honeymoon?
For divers and snorkellers, absolutely — it has the best easy-access marine life within four hours of India. For general beach holidays, Thailand or Bali deliver more variety per rupee; the Maldives sells perfection, not variety.
Can vegetarians manage at resorts?
Yes — resorts hosting Indian guests routinely run Indian vegetarian counters, and half-board buffets always have options. On local islands it's simpler: rice, dal-adjacent curries, roshi bread and fruit — confirm with the guesthouse ahead.
Seaplane or speedboat resort?
With under 5 nights or a tight budget: speedboat resort, no debate. Seaplanes stop flying at sunset, so far-atoll arrivals on evening flights mean an airport-hotel night each way — hidden cost, lost time.
