Singapore

Singapore
The Compass Brief — Singapore

🗓 Best time: Genuinely year-round — expect a short tropical downpour most afternoons whatever the month. February–April is marginally driest; avoid pricing spikes around F1 week (late September) unless you're going for it.

💰 Realistic budget: ₹75,000–₹1,10,000 per person for 5 nights including flights. Accommodation is the budget's heavy line.

🛂 Visa for Indians: Indians require a visa: applied through Singapore's authorised agents in India, typically ₹2,600–3,500 all-in, issued in 3–5 working days, usually as a multiple-entry e-visa valid 2 years. Apply 2–3 weeks ahead.

Singapore is where we send families taking their first international trip, and the logic is hard to argue with: a five-hour flight, English everywhere, a transit system that makes Delhi Metro look leisurely, and a city that treats cleanliness as a competitive sport. It is also — be warned — the most expensive stop in Southeast Asia, and budgeting it like Bangkok ends in disappointment.

Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay
Gardens by the Bay — the free 7.45pm Supertree light show is the best-value spectacle in the city.

The shape of the trip

Five nights is the sweet spot. Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay on day one; Sentosa's beaches and Universal Studios for the family day; Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam for the neighbourhoods; the world-class (and free) Botanic Gardens; and a final day for the Jewel waterfall at Changi — which deserves hours, not a stopover glance. Night owls should add the Night Safari, still the best of its kind anywhere.

The money

One Singapore dollar is roughly ₹65, and the city makes sure you feel it — except at hawker centres, where Michelin-listed plates cost ₹250–450 and constitute the country's great equaliser. Hotels are the pain point: budget ₹9,000–15,000 for a decent double, or consider the excellent capsule and pod hotels from ₹3,500. The EZ-Link transit card keeps daily transport under ₹400.

Getting in

Singapore issues visas to Indians only through authorised agents — there is no direct application — so use a reputable one and apply two to three weeks out. The multiple-entry validity most applicants receive quietly makes Singapore the perfect hub for a two-country trip with Malaysia or Indonesia.
