South Africa

🗓 Best time: The seasons split usefully: October–March is Cape Town and coast at their finest; May–September is prime Kruger safari (dry bush, visible game) and whale season at Hermanus (Jun–Nov).
💰 Realistic budget: ₹1,40,000–₹2,00,000 per person for 8 nights including flights.
🛂 Visa for Indians: Indians currently apply for a tourist visa through VFS South Africa; the country has been phasing in an electronic Travel Authorisation system, so check the current channel 6–8 weeks before travel and start paperwork early.
Few places on earth pack this much country into one ticket: a city where a flat-topped mountain rises straight from two oceans' meeting, vineyard valleys an hour away, whales breaching off winter headlands — and then, a flight north, the Big Five in Kruger's bush. South Africa is five holidays wearing one flag, and the rand makes the luxury tier startlingly attainable.

The shape of the trip
The classic (8 nights): Cape Town (4) — Table Mountain, the Cape Point drive past penguins at Boulders, the V&A Waterfront, a Robben Island morning; the Winelands for a day of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek; then fly to Kruger or a private reserve (3 nights) for the Big Five. Longer trips thread the Garden Route between.
The money
The rand is the traveller's friend: boutique guesthouses ₹5,000–9,000, a serious steak-and-wine dinner ₹1,200–1,800, world-class wine estates tasting at ₹300–500. Safari spans ₹12,000 (Kruger self-drive lodges) to ₹40,000+ (private reserves, all-in) per person daily. Internal flights are cheap; book with the long-haul.
Worth knowing
Start the visa 6–8 weeks out and watch for the new electronic system. Use registered taxis/ride-hailing and normal city sense. And follow the seasons honestly — May and October thread the Cape-plus-safari combination best.
