South Korea

South Korea
The Compass Brief — South Korea

🗓 Best time: April for cherry blossoms, October–November for flaming autumn palaces — Korea's two perfect seasons. Summer is humid; winter is bitter but beautiful for skiers.

💰 Realistic budget: ₹1,10,000–₹1,50,000 per person for 7 nights including flights.

🛂 Visa for Indians: Indians require a tourist visa via the Korean visa application centres (K-ETA does not apply to Indian passports). Fees are modest, processing typically 1–2 weeks; apply a month ahead with itinerary and funds proof.

A generation of Indians arrived at Korea through its dramas and music; the country itself outperforms the trailer. Seoul is what the future looks like when it keeps its palaces — Gyeongbokgung's changing of the guard against glass towers, hanbok-clad crowds in six-hundred-year-old alleys, then street food at Gwangjang market and shopping districts that run past midnight. Beyond the capital wait Busan's beaches and temple-by-the-sea, and countryside autumns that explain half of Korean cinema's colour palette.

Gyeongbokgung, Seoul — rent a hanbok and palace entry is free; the photographs are better anyway.

The shape of the trip

The classic (7 nights): Seoul (4–5) — palaces, Bukchon's hanok lanes, Myeongdong and Hongdae by night, a DMZ tour for the history that still shapes everything; then the KTX bullet train to Busan (2–3) for Haeundae beach, the Gamcheon culture village and Haedong Yonggungsa temple above the surf.

The money

Comfortable doubles run ₹6,000–10,000; a bulgogi or fried-chicken dinner ₹700–1,200; street-food grazing, half that; the Seoul–Busan KTX about ₹3,800. T-money cards handle all transport. Skincare and K-fashion shopping is genuinely cheaper than in India — budget accordingly, deliberately.

Worth knowing

Start the visa a month out; it is paperwork, not an obstacle. Naver Map beats Google here. Book cherry-blossom season like Japan's — months ahead — and learn the two magic words: annyeonghaseyo and gamsahamnida open every door.
