Turkey
The Compass Brief — Turkey

🗓 Best time: April–June and September–October: warm, clear and short of the August crush. Cappadocia's balloons fly year-round, weather permitting — winter flights over snow-dusted fairy chimneys are the secret best version.

💰 Realistic budget: ₹85,000–₹1,30,000 per person for 7 nights including flights, mid-range.

🛂 Visa for Indians: Indians holding a valid US, UK, Schengen or Ireland visa/residence can take the e-Visa online (single entry, 30 days). Everyone else applies for a sticker visa through the official application centres — allow 3–4 weeks and budget ₹4,000–5,500. Verify current rules before booking; Turkish policy shifts.

Turkey compresses more civilisation into one itinerary than any country we plan: a city that was capital to three empires, a valley where hot-air balloons rise over cave churches at dawn, travertine terraces that look Photoshopped and never are. It demands more paperwork from Indian passports than its rivals — plan the visa first, the flights second — and repays the effort completely.

Dawn over Göreme, Cappadocia. Book the balloon for your first morning — weather cancellations then have two mornings' insurance.

The shape of the trip

The essential pair (7 nights): Istanbul (4 nights) — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi's treasury, the Grand Bazaar's 4,000 shops, a Bosphorus ferry at sunset, and at least one long dinner in Karaköy. Then fly to Cappadocia (3 nights) for the balloon flight (₹14,000–20,000, book ahead), the underground cities, and a cave hotel — pay for one; it is the point. Travellers with ten days add Pamukkale's white terraces or the Ephesus ruins on the Aegean.

The money

The lira's volatility keeps Turkey cheaper than Western Europe: excellent Istanbul hotels in Sultanahmet or Karaköy run ₹6,000–10,000; a full kebab-meze-baklava dinner, ₹800–1,400; the Istanbulkart makes trams and ferries almost free. Domestic flights to Cappadocia cost ₹3,500–6,000 booked early. Haggling in the bazaars is expected, theatrical, and half the fun.

The paperwork, honestly

The e-Visa shortcut only exists for Indians who already hold a live US, UK, Schengen or Ireland visa — a large share of our clients, as it happens. Everyone else goes the sticker-visa route: straightforward, but slow enough that the visa, not the airfare, should set your booking timeline.
