United Kingdom

🗓 Best time: May–September brings long daylight and the festival calendar (Edinburgh's August is world theatre). London works year-round; December's lights excuse the cold.
💰 Realistic budget: ₹1,60,000–₹2,20,000 per person for 7 nights including flights.
🛂 Visa for Indians: Standard Visitor Visa (~£127), now issued digitally as an eVisa — Indians do NOT use the UK 'ETA', which applies only to visa-exempt nationalities. Apply 6–8 weeks out; priority services exist for a fee.
London remains the world's greatest free museum-city — the British Museum, the Nationals, the Tate, all costing nothing — wrapped around royal pageantry, West End nights and neighbourhoods that reinvent themselves per postcode. The upgrade most first-timers miss: the country beyond, where the Cotswolds' stone villages and Edinburgh's volcanic old town turn a city break into a proper British journey.

The shape of the trip
The classic (7 nights): London (4–5) — the Tower and Westminster, a museum morning daily, Borough Market lunches, one West End show booked ahead, and a day out to Windsor or Oxford; then north by train to Edinburgh (2–3) for the castle, the Royal Mile and Arthur's Seat at sunset. The Cotswolds substitute beautifully for the slower-paced.
The money
London beds are the budget's boss: ₹9,000–15,000 for well-located comfort. Balance them with the free museums, ₹600–900 pub classics, supermarket meal-deals, and an Oyster/contactless cap keeping transport sane. Advance rail to Edinburgh from ₹3,500 — booked late it triples.
Worth knowing
Ignore anyone selling Indians a UK 'ETA' — it does not exist for us; the Visitor Visa is the route and its file rewards neat finances. Book theatre and afternoon-tea slots before flying. And carry a light raincoat in every month, as the locals resignedly do.
