"Bali vs Thailand from India: The 2026 Answer Has Changed"

For a decade this comparison had a lazy answer — "Thailand is easier, Bali is prettier" — and in 2026 the lazy answer finally broke. Thailand withdrew visa-free entry for Indians in May; Bali's visa on arrival now undercuts it by more than half. The scales have genuinely moved, so here is the comparison recalculated, by people who send clients to both every week.

The paperwork — the new decider

Bali: visa on arrival, about ₹2,600, thirty days, extendable. Thailand: visa on arrival at ₹5,900 in baht cash for just fifteen days, or a pre-applied e-Visa for sixty, plus the mandatory TDAC digital arrival card before boarding. For a family of four, Thailand's paperwork now costs roughly ₹24,000 against Bali's ₹10,400 — a difference that used to be zero. Advantage, suddenly and decisively: Bali.

Getting there

Thailand claws it back here. Delhi–Bangkok is one of India's busiest corridors — four-and-a-half hours, relentless competition, fares from ₹15,000 return, plus direct Phuket options. Bali means a connection through KL, Singapore or Bangkok: eight to twelve hours door to door and fares from ₹19,000. Short leave calendars should weight this heavily. Advantage: Thailand.

What the days cost

On the ground they are closer than reputation suggests. Street food: ₹150–300 in both, with Thailand's the deeper cuisine and Bali's cafés the prettier stage. Mid-range doubles: ₹3,500–4,500 in both. Where they part: Bali's private pool villa at ₹8,000–12,000 has no Thai equivalent at the price, while Thailand's islands offer more choice under ₹2,500. Beer and nightlife cost less in Thailand; Bali taxes alcohol hard.

The experience itself

Thailand is breadth: a world-class city, two coastlines, forty islands, the better massages, the bigger nights out. Perfect first international trip — the tourism machine is frictionless. Bali is depth: one island's temples, rice terraces, waterfalls, surf and ceremony, with a beauty-per-kilometre density Thailand cannot match and the honeymoon aesthetic Instagram runs on. Groups of friends lean Thailand; couples lean Bali; families split by age of children (younger: Thailand's ease; teenagers: Bali's adventure).

Weather windows

The verdict

For 2026 we now tell clients this: choose Bali if the trip is a couple's trip, if the visa saving matters, or if it falls between May and September — the value equation has swung its way. Choose Thailand if flight time rules, if the group wants nightlife and island-hopping variety, or if it's a first passport stamp and you want everything to be easy — just budget the new ₹5,900 honestly and do the TDAC the day before flying.
