"Guwahati Goes International: Northeast India Gets Its First Direct Gulf Flights in August"
A quiet piece of aviation history arrives next month: from 4 August, Air India Express connects Guwahati and Dubai non-stop, followed on 7 August by Guwahati–Abu Dhabi — the first time Northeast India has had direct international links to the UAE.
Why this matters beyond the Northeast
Until now, a traveller from Guwahati, Shillong or anywhere in the Seven Sisters bound for the Gulf faced a connection in Delhi or Kolkata, adding five to eight hours and a fare premium to every trip. The new routes collapse that journey to a single flight — and the traffic flows both ways, opening the Northeast's extraordinary and under-visited landscapes to Gulf-based Indian expatriates flying home and to international visitors connecting through Dubai's global network.
The Guwahati launches cap a summer in which Air India Express has methodically widened India's Gulf map from smaller metros: Bengaluru–Dubai began in May, Bengaluru–Doha in June, Hyderabad–Abu Dhabi in mid-June, and Indore–Abu Dhabi and Lucknow–Abu Dhabi both launch this week, on 15 and 16 July respectively.
What it means for trip planning: Dubai holidays no longer price-penalise travellers outside the big four metros. If you're in Indore, Lucknow or the Northeast, compare the new non-stops against the old one-stop fares before assuming the Delhi routing is cheaper — launch-period pricing on new routes is frequently the best it will ever be, as airlines buy market share. Our Dubai guide covers the trip itself.
The domestic ripple
The same expansion has strengthened leisure connectivity inside India: Pune–Bagdogra (the gateway to Darjeeling, Sikkim and the Eastern Himalaya) now flies five times weekly, with Chennai–Bagdogra alongside it, and Mumbai and Ahmedabad have gained links to Chandigarh and Dehradun. For hill-station trips from the west and south, the Bagdogra routes in particular remove the tedious Kolkata connection that has always inflated Sikkim itineraries.
Launch dates verified against airline announcements at publication; inaugural schedules occasionally shift by a few days — confirm when booking.
