Kashmir's tulip season: the two-week window everyone mistimes

Every spring, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar opens for roughly three to four weeks, 1.7 million bulbs bloom in bands of colour against the Zabarwan mountains — and roughly half the visitors arrive a week too late to see anything but stems. The garden is Asia's largest, the spectacle is genuinely world-class, and the timing problem is entirely solvable.

How the timing actually works

The garden typically opens in the third or fourth week of March, and peak bloom is the first ten to fourteen days after opening. The exact dates shift with the winter's snowfall — a warm February pulls everything earlier; a long winter pushes it into April. The reliable method: follow the Floriculture Department's official opening announcement (usually made in early March) and book flights for within the first week after the announced opening date — not for "sometime in April." By the third week after opening, the early varieties are done and the beds start gapping; by mid-April most years, the show is effectively over.

What the garden is actually like

Thirty hectares of terraced beds sloping toward Dal Lake, with the Zabarwan range as the backdrop — the postcard frame shoots from the upper terraces looking downhill over the colour bands to the water. Sixty-plus varieties bloom in waves, which is why even within the window, week one (tulips + hyacinths + daffodils) looks different from week three (late varieties, thinning beds). Entry is nominal (under ₹100); the garden opens early morning and the light before 9am is the photographer's window in every sense — golden light, no queues, no crowds in your frame. Weekends after 11am are shoulder-to-shoulder; go on a weekday.

Build a trip around it, not just to it

Tulip season is also Srinagar's loveliest shoulder window, and the smart move is a full spring itinerary:

• Houseboat rates run 30–40% below summer peak — the deluxe boats that cost ₹8,000 in June go for ₹5,000.
• Almond and cherry blossom bloom across the city in the same window — Badamwari garden in the old city is the almond-blossom counterpart almost nobody visits.
• Gulmarg still has late-season snow, meaning one trip captures tulips in the morning and snow play by afternoon — a combination impossible in any other month. The gondola queues are also spring-mild.
• The shape that works: 3 nights Srinagar (tulips, gardens, old city, shikara at dawn) + 2 nights Gulmarg (snow, gondola). Pahalgam is better saved for a summer return — its valleys are still brown in early April.

Practical notes

• Weekday, before 10am. It bears repeating — this single decision is the difference between the garden and a queue.
• Dress in layers: April mornings in Srinagar are 4–8°C, afternoons 18–20°C.
• The Tulip Festival (cultural programs, craft stalls) runs alongside the bloom in most years and is worth an hour.
• Photographers: a polariser deepens the bed colours against the mountain haze; shoot the terraces top-down for the layered-colour frame, and go wide from the lake-facing rows at sunset.
• Combine with Friday prayers timing awareness in the old city, and check gondola maintenance schedules — Phase 2 occasionally closes for pre-summer servicing in this window.

Catch it right and Kashmir in tulip season is the best-value fortnight in Indian travel: spring flowers, snow mountains, empty houseboats and shoulder-season prices, all in one trip. Catch it wrong by ten days and you'll be photographing green stems. Now you won't.
